    This Eaton’s London (Middlesex) copperConder halfpenny token, dated 1795 (Dalton & Hamer Middlesex No. 301;Atkins 216; 29 mm.) has great eye appeal with great color and surfaces.
    Obverse:
    Bust of Eaton to left over ribbon reading: “FRANGASNON FLECTES” (break not, bend), with legend: “. D. I. EATON THREE TIMESACQUITTED OF SEDITION .” Reverse: A cock crowing on a fence over pigs in a sty,one of whom is holding up a political pamphlet in his snout, with legend:“PRINTER TO THE MAJESTY OF THE PEOPLE. LONDON . 1795 .”

    Daniel Isaac Eaton was tried on a number ofoccasions for publishing seditious material.
    He was eventually found guilty of libel butmanaged to get away to America for three years, only to face fifteen month’sprison on his return, and the destruction of £28,000 worth of stock by fire.
    In 1812 he was sentenced to eighteen months inNewgate Prison and then an hour in the pillory where he was cheered andshowered with flowers the whole time.
    Hedied in poverty a few years afterwards.
    Forsome time he occupied a shop at “The Cock & Swine” the emblem of which isfeatured on the reverse of the token.
