Civil War US Army Private Purchase Forage Cap Campaigner Grade Reproduction by Mike Anderson, Size 8
This is a new reproduction US Army Private Purchase Forage Cap made by myself, Mike Anderson of "Anderson Dry Goods." I retired from making goods for retailers about 12 years ago but continued making a few items for "pards." I was a former manufacturer of many items for "Jersey Skillet Licker", "Wambaugh, White & Company", Regimental Quartermaster and a few others. Although I made a wide range of authentic quality goods, I was most known for my headwear. I DO NOT have plans of going back in business but I an committed to using up what remaining quality textiles I still have on hand. Over the years I have examined and handled countless originals and studied countless others that had been photographed. I recreate historical reproductions using period type materials, patterns, and construction methods, giving special attention to details.
This Private Purchase Forage Cap was inspired by several originals I've examined, with the added features not found in issue forage caps. These were common among officers in particular and occasionally with enlistedmen. The body is made from fine dark blue broadcloth wool, with the correct finish and weight and has a 6" top. Rows of stitching are added along the front and back seams, giving the cap a more finished look and helping it keep it's shape. It is lined with a black cotton sateen with a quilted crown often seen in these PP caps. The crown includes the "JAsY. DAVIS WASHINGTON D.C." gold embossed manufacturers marking. (I chose to reproduce this Washington D.C. manufacturer because of his location during the war where many units passed through that area during the war) Leather sweatband carefully handstitched in place finishes the inside.
The outside is finished with a leather bound tarred visor and a leather chinstrap which is affixed on each end with brass eagle "I" buttons and a brass kepi buckle. Size is military size 8, measuring 23-7/8". I've attached my sizing chart with the pics. All these details combined make for a beautiful cap with a great profile.
