    Description

First, TWO NOTES ON THESE TROUSERS
    :
    #1
: In terms of the Union army, the patterning used for these trousers is what is known as “private purchase” - meaning privately tailored and not army issue. The vast majority of officer’s trousers were “private purchase”. However, some enlisted men would have their trousers made by tailors as well. Over the years I have seen several original privately tailored trousers that were worn by enlisted men (identified either by a name and/or unit written on the inside or by NCO striping sewn on).
    #2
: The first photo shows the "private purchase" trousers listed here as they currently are – cut out but not assembled. Photos two thru twelve are a pair of "private purchase" enlisted man's trousers made a short while ago from this
    very same pattern
. Those photos are used here simply to demonstrate the finished product as well as show the sewing details and other features such as inside cottons, cuff finish, rear belts, etc).  The price shown for these trousers are for a PLAIN / UNTRIMMED PAIR. They will work fine for privates. If you need officer side seam piping or NCO striping (corporals & sergeants) this will incur a fee so please message me for price and details BEFORE you buy.
Thanks for your time to read this information. Over the years we have offered “private purchase” trousers and many gentlemen being unfamiliar with the term would ask what did that mean. Of course, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to send me a message; I’m here to help.
So we have on hand a pair of
    UNASSEMBLED
sky blue wool “private purchase” pattern trousers that will be completed to the buyers size specifications upon sale. These are for foot soldiers and NOT the mounted style trousers. These are currently cut out to the following sizes:
    WAIST:
    (as measured at
    navel level
    )
    44”
    HIPS/SEAT:
will fit a gentleman with a
    42”
seat (as measured all the way around the fullest part of the hips/buttocks area)
    INSEAM:
will fit an individual with a
    29”
    inseam
(with a 1” rolled cuff in place)
    Now,
    WE CAN ALTER
these trousers to the buyers personal size
    SO LONG AS
those sizes are as currently advertised
    OR SMALLER.
We will then FINISH ASSEMBLY UPON SALE. The Buy-It-Now price is for one fully assembled ready-to-wear pair of PLAIN (untrimmed) trousers right out of the box.
Upon sale we will contact the buyer to get the three measurements we will need to assemble the trousers.
    Sorry,
these trousers are not available for sale in their current state (meaning just cut out, not finished). However, full return / refund privileges are in place in the event there are any fitting issues when the buyer receives the finished product.
These trousers will be made to “Standard Grade” specifications (
principally machine sewn but with hand sewn button holes, rolled hand felled cuffs and hand tacking on the pocket opening corners
). Just to mention it, the assembled trousers in the photos have
    hand felled
fly and waistband facings. This was requested by - and separately paid for - by the buyer. The trousers for sale here will have machine felled fly and waistband facings (unless of course the buyer requests the hand felled "at cost" option).
These trousers feature side seam pockets, a right side watch pocket, rear belts with a two-tine brass buckle, white cotton drill pockets, black polished cotton left side fly facings and a white cotton drill right side fly facing. Buttons will be black stipple faced tin with seven 3/4” on the waistband and five 1/2” in the fly. The trousers are correctly cut with a high waist, tapered waistband and a high rise back. Cuffs will be rolled and hand hemmed.
The wool used in these trousers is a blend of 85% wool and 15% synthetic fiber.
We have had some folks ask us if this is former Woolrich Mills fabric but no, it isn’t.
Still, the fabric we use today is a solid 21 oz tightly woven wool with excellent durability. We’ve used this wool (along with Woolrich fabric when it used to be available) for a number of years with excellent wear results in the field; plus it has a good sky blue color for Federal trousers. a free swatch is available if you'd like to see this wool before making any purchase. Just message me with your name and mailing address and I’ll get one in the mail.
    ASSEMBLY TIME:
We do need to mention that since we are
    VERY busy
in the shop we will require at least thirty days to be able to get to and then assemble the trousers. The clock starts ticking when the trousers are purchased and paid for. We have accounted for this with a thirty day (working days - not counting weekends) handling time (see DELIVERY at the top of this auction page). Any questions concerning this please message me
    BEFORE
    you buy. Thanks!

    PHOTO NOTE:
The photo of the unassembled pair (the first photo) was just recently taken with a cell phone camera and without use of a flash. The remaining photos were taken with a different camera a few months ago and with a flash in use. I just wanted to mention why the big difference there in shade of sky blue. As soon as I have a flash based photo of the unassembled trousers I'll post it.

    A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
Started sewing/reenacting in 1968. Went full time into the repro uniform business in '75 and retired from full time manufacturing (Stony Brook Company) in 2020. I still keep a hand in the trade though and use eBay as my selling venue. :-)
