US Civil War Forage Cap - Union/Federal McDowell Style Forage Cap - Size XLThe Pattern 1861 US Army Cap, otherwise known as the "McDowell Cap" or "Forage Cap" was a popular style borrowed from the French and Austrians. It featured the same high, fold-over crown common to all forage caps of the period, but outfitted with a narrow crescent shaped brim.
The name "McDowell Cap" originated with US General Irwin McDowell who helped popularize the style. Contractors for the US Army produced hundreds of thousands during the Civil War. Additionally, many more were manufactured and available as private purchase items. They were worn by enlisted men and officers alike.
